DyeStat IL - Conference Recap #2 - May 16, 2016

Weather did play some effect on a few of the meets this weekend including moving the Southwest Conference moving from Wednesday to Thursday and the MSL Championships turning into a two day affair. It did not stop some of the athletes from putting up some great performances including Darryl Sullivan clearing 7-4 and Sam Sikon with a 65-2 ½ put at the South Seven Boys Meet, Jack Aho running 9:00.20 to win the 3200 Meter Run at the Fox Valley Conference Boys Meet, and Oak Park-River Forest running a state’s best 7:43.56 in the 3200 Meter Relay at the WSC-Boys Silver Championships. You can read about that meet here.

Here is a look at some of the conference meets that took place throughout Illinois this past week. Part 1 of the recap can be found here.

Big 12 Conference Boys @ Danville

Bloomington ran away with the conference championship (122 ½ points) followed by Normal West (83 ½ points), Peoria Richwoods (68 ½ points), and Champaign Centennial 66 points). The sprints were the spotlight events in this meet.

Vincent Gordon (Centennial HS, Champaign) won the 100 Meter Dash (10.79) edging Bloomington’s Cary Lockhart by two hundredths of a second (10.81). Gordon earlier had jumped 22-1 to win the Long Jump. Lockhart avenged the 100 loss by winning the 200 Meter Dash (22.37) ahead of Gordon (22.89). It was a close finish in the 400 Meter Dash as Avery Lyons (Bloomington HS) ran 49.82 to win by just five hundredths of a second ahead of Gordon (49.87).

Victor Fortin (Notre Dame HS, Peoria) won the 3200 Meter Run (9:48.06) and then came back to complete the double by winning the 1600 Meter Run (4:30.82) by over four seconds ahead of Danville’s Carl Way (4:35.22). The Pole Vault was the most competitive of all the field events. Ryan Ashenbremer (Normal West) won the event (15-9) with Zachery Bradford (Bloomington HS) placing second (15-3).

Central Illinois Conference Boys @ Shelbyville

Diondre Lewis (Warrensburg-Latham HS) showed that he will be one of the top 1A sprinters in the upcoming state meet.  The sophomore won the three sprint events in this conference meet. He started by running 10.75 (IL #9) to win the 100 Meter Dash just ahead of Jason Duncan (St. Teresa HS, Decatur). Lewis then dominated in the 400 Meter Dash (49.92) with Ryan Skowronski (Shelbyville HS) two seconds back (51.99). Lewis completed his sweep winning the 200 Meter Dash (22.67) ahead of his twin brother Dionte (23.16). Both Lewis brothers also teamed up to push Warrensburg Latham to the win in the 400 Meter Relay (43.95).

There were two double winners in the Field events and one more on the track. Jordan Smith (Shelbyville HS) won the Long Jump (22-3 ¼) and the Triple Jump (42-9). Hunter Woodard (Tuscola HS) controlled the weight events. He won the Shot Put (51-10) and then the Discus (139-10). Marcus Skinner (Shelbyville HS) also picked up two wins running 10:03.11 to win the 3200 Meter Run and 4:37.20 to win the 1600 Meter Run.

Shelbyville won the conference championship (171 ½ points) ahead of Warrensburg-Latham (122 points) and Tuscola (112 points).

Central State Eight Boys @ Springfield’s Memorial Stadium

Springfield captured the conference championship with 174 points ahead of Springfield Lanphier (157 points) and Chatham-Glenwood (120 ½ points). Springfield was powered by Heath Warren’s wins in the 800 and 1600 Meter Run. In a classic 800, Warren ran the state’s best time (1:51.91) just ahead of Rochester’s Josh Cable (1:53.25, IL #4). Warren came back to run 4:25.82 to win the 1600 just ahead of Glenwood’s Landon Skelly (4:26.30).

Chatham-Glenwood ran 1:29.63 to win the 800 Meter Relay just three hundredths of a second ahead of Springfield in what was the closest race of the night. Lanphier was dominant in the field events with several 1-2 finishes. Rudy Ester led the way for the Lions as he jumped 22-0 to win the Long Jump and 43-1 to win the Triple Jump. Lanphier’s Dearis Herron was also impressive as he ran 50.15 to win the 400 Meter Dash by more than a second.

CSL-North Boys @ Glenbrook North

Host Glenbrook North won the conference title with 171 points followed by Niles North (132 points). The best race of the night was the 3200 Meter Run. Martin Barr (Niles North HS, Skokie) broke his school record running 9:07.27 (IL #4). Brett Davidson (Highland Park HS) also had a great race finishing second (9:10.92, IL #8). Barr came back to run 4:28.12 to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of Highland Park’s Jonathan Rosenfeld (4:30.25) and Davidson (4:30.57). The 400 Meter Relay was also fast as Niles North ran 42.35 for the win ahead of Glenbrook North (42.62).

Mason Rosenfeld (Glenbrook North HS, Northbrook) was a multiple individual event winner as he swept the sprint events. Rosenberg ran 11.23 to win 100 Meter Dash, 49.65 to win the 400 Meter Dash, and 22.62 to win the 200 Meter Dash.

CSL-South Boys @ New Trier

Evanston Township edged New Trier 165-152 for the conference team championship behind five individual wins by Brad Garron and Roland Amarteifio. The two tied for the 100 Meter Dash both being timed at 11.04. Garron ran 49.15 to win the 400 Meter Dash as well as 22.17 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Both of Amarteifio’s wins were more than a second as he ran 14.52 to win the 110 High Hurdles and then 38.43 (IL #6) to win the 300 Hurdles. Evanston also ran 42.31 to win the 400 Meter Relay.

Reese Jordan (Maine South HS, Park Ridge) ran a personal best 4:21.98 to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of New Trier’s Jack Litowitz (New Trier HS, Winnetka). Ted Oh (New Trier HS, Winnetka) won a close 800 running 1:56.88 to win by nine hundredths of a second ahead of Niles West’s Frankie Santa (1:56.97). New Trier also ran 8:06.30 to win the 3200 Meter Relay by 27 seconds ahead of Glenbrook South.

DuPage Valley Conference Boys @ Wheaton-Warrenville South

Neuqua Valley finished their first year in the conference winning the outdoor championship scoring 116 points. Wheaton North (98 points) and Wheaton-Warrenville South (91 points) finished second and third. Neuqua Valley won the indoor conference championship in March.

Neuqua Valley has traditionally been strong in distance events and they showed why again in this meet sweeping all four events. Their quartet ran 8:02.55 to win the 3200 Meter Relay ten seconds ahead of Metea Valley (8:12.30). Patrick Wolak won the 3200 Meter Run (9:37.85) ahead of teammate Dominic Dina (9:40.22). Isaiah Robinson ran a season’s best 1:55.07 to win the 800 Meter Run. Connor Horn finished second (1:58.47) as he won the first section of the event. Horn came back to run 4:21.81 to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of Waubonsie Valley’s Riley Miller (4:22.23) and Neuqua’s Scott Anderson (4:22.88).

Jordan Cagigal (Metea Valley HS, Aurora) won the 400 Meter Dash (48.98, IL #12) by a tenth of a second ahead of Wheaton North’s Adam Terrini (49.08). Three teams went under 43 seconds in the 400 Meter Relay with Metea Valley winning (42.34). Neuqua Valley (42.58) and Wheaton North (42.90) followed.

Devion Hodges (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream) jumped a personal best 23-6 (IL #6) to win the Long Jump.

East Suburban Catholic Conference Boys @ Niles Notre Dame

Marist captured the conference championship (139 points) ahead of St. Viator (113 points) and Benet Academy (112 ½ points). Denzel Downing (St. Viator HS, Arlington Heights) was the top athlete of the meet winning three events. He started off with a quick double winning the 110 Highs (14.81) by more than a second and 11.18 to win the 100 Meter Dash. Downing came back later in the meet to run 39.78 to win the 300 Hurdles.

Jeff Girardot (Benet Academy HS, Lisle) ran 2:01.14 to win the 800 Meter Run and then 4:34.87 to win the 1600 Meter Run.

Fox Valley Conference Boys @ Dundee Crown

Huntley was in charge of this meet winning the team championship with 159 points. Grayslake Central scored 93 points to edge McHenry by one point for second. Jack Aho (Grayslake Central HS) dropped his PR down ten seconds when he ran 9:00.20 (IL #2) to win the 3200 Meter Run by ten seconds ahead of Woodstock’s Luke Beattie (9:10.70).  Aho finished second in the 1600 Meter Run (4:25.16) as Keagan Smith (Huntley HS) pulled away from the win running 4:22.72. Smith was also a part of Huntley’s winning 3200 Meter Relay (7:51.00, IL #5) to win by eight seconds ahead of McHenry.

Huntley swept the other three relays running 43.10 to win the 400 Meter Dash, 1:30.63 to win the 800 Meter Relay, and the 1600 Meter Relay (3:28.26).

Mid-Illinois Boys @ Morton

Metamora won the team championship with 176 points ahead of Pekin (134 points) and Canton (74 points).

Matt Carr (Limestone HS, Bartonville) ran a personal best 4:20.02 (IL #21) to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of Metamora’s Jake Gillum (4:23.65). Earier in the 800 Meter Run, Gillum ran 1:56.38 (IL #31) for the win three seconds ahead of Michael Church (East Peoria HS). Jacob Donath (Pekin HS) cleared a personal best 6-7 to win the High Jump.

Julian Hill (Pekin HS) was the meet’s only multiple event winner. He jumped 22-3 to win the Long Jump and 45-0 to win the Triple Jump. Hill also won the 200 Meter Dash (22.54) ahead of Metamora’s Grant Duvendack (22.89). In the 100 Meter Dash, it was Duvendack who came away with the win (11.13) by only two hundredths of a second ahead of Hill.

Mid-Suburban League Boys Championships @ Rolling Meadows

Heavy rains interrupted the meet Friday evening forcing the meet to finish up on Saturday. Prospect left Saturday afternoon with the conference championship with 156 points. Hoffman Estates finished second (138 points) followed by Wheeling (95 points) and Palatine (91 points).

Declan Rustay almost put Hoffman Estates on top winning three individual events. The sophomore ran 11.08 to win the 100 Meter Dash. He came back to run 49.46 to win the 400 Meter Dash. His third win came in the 200 Meter Dash when he won by only seven hundredths of a second ahead of Palatine’s Courtland Cornelius (22.67-22.74). Karsen Lecomte helped Prospect by winning the 3200 Meter Run (9:22.12) by five seconds ahead of Palatine’s Brian Leonard (9:27.50). LeComte came back to run 4:21.83 to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of Fremd’s Danny Peterson (4:23.98).

Jelyn Hill (Hoffman Estates HS) also had a double win clearing 6-7 to win the High Jump and winning the Long Jump (22-0). Prospect captured three of the four relay events. The Knights ran 7:55.98 to win the 3200 Meter Relay ahead of Fremd (8:00.52) and Hersey (8:01.79). Prospect then won the 400 Meter Relay (43.03) just ahead of Hoffman Estates (43.26). They concluded the meet by winning the 1600 Meter Relay (3:28.39) just ahead of Barrington (3:28.58). The only relay the slipped Prospect’s grasp was the 800 Meter Relay in which Wheeling won (1:31.69) ahead of Hoffman Estates (1:32.14).

Mississippi Valley Conference Boys @ Bethalto

Adam Nelson (Traid HS, Troy) had a big night at this conference meet winning three individual events. Nelson started by jumping 20-10 to win the Long Jump. He was the king of the sprints as he ran 10.79 to win the 100 Meter Dash and 22.28 to win the 200 Meter Dash by more than a second ahead of Greyson Moehrs (Waterloo HS). Moehrs also had a good night running 15.01 to win the 110 High Hurdles and 40.86 to win the 300 Intermediate Hurdles. Nelson also helped Triad win the 400 Meter Relay (43.83).

Ben Flowers (Jersey HS, Jerseyville) picked up multiple wins running 10:06.20 to win the 3200 Meter Run and 4:33.42 to win the 1600 Meter Run. Mascoutah won the 3200 Meter Relay (8:08.46) four seconds ahead of Waterloo (8:12.67). It was Waterloo that won the conference championship 187-164 over Mascoutah.

NIB XII Conference Boys @ Sterling

Geneseo captured the conference title with 139 points followed by Kaneland (114 points) and DeKalb (112 points). Geneseo’s Reed Vanderheyden won the 110 High Hurdles (15.21) and then 38.40 to win the 300 Hurdles. Antonio Tate (DeKalb HS) also had a good night running 11.03 to win the 100 Meter Dash, 21.60 to win the 200 Meter Dash, and 22-3 ½ to win the Long Jump. Tate also was part of DeKalb’s winning team in the 400 Relay (42.76).

Will Daniels (Geneseo HS) cleared 6-5 to win the High Jump and came back to jump 43-3 ½ to win the Triple Jump. Sam Weisz (Yorkville HS) was also a double winner with wins in the Shot Put (53-5 ½) and the Discus (169-8).

North Suburban Conference Boys @ Stevenson

Octavian Wells won two individual events to help Grant to win the conference championship 99-83 over Lakes Community. Wells opened up by winning the 100 Meter Dash (10.90) by only six hundredths of a second ahead of Lake Zurich’s Ben Klett (10.96). It was the 400 Meter Dash where Wells shined as he ran a state best (48.24) to win the event over a tough field. Cameron Ruiz (Lakes HS, Lake Villa finished second (49.18) followed by Zion-Benton’s Michael Edwards (49.25), Lakes’ Brandon Thiel (49.70), and Warren Township’s Hugo Flores (49.81).

Gavin Hoch (Lake Forest HS) won the 300 Hurdles (38.48) just ahead of Grant’s Timmy Brundidge (38.83). It was a different story in the 110 High Hurdles as Brundidge ran 14.30 (IL #5) to win the race ahead of Antioch’s Landon Keefover (14.80), Hoch (14.94), and Grant’s Chris Hatton (14.95). Less than a second separated the top three runners in the 800 Meter Run. Thomas Mosley (Zion-Benton HS) won the race (1:55.24) just ahead of Lake Zurich’s Brian Griffith (1:55.52) and Vernon Hills’ Tim Krashevsky (1:55.85).

Cameron Ruiz had a great meet even after his second place finish in the 400. He jumped 23-1 ¾ to win the Long Jump as well as jumping 45-1 ½ to win the Triple Jump. Ruiz was also a part of Lakes’ winning 1600 Meter Relay (3:21.58, IL #5) finishing ahead of Warren (3:22.10, IL #7), Lake Forest (3:22.79), and Grant (3:23.48).

Jared Borowsky (Stevenson HS, Lincolnshire) was a double winner in his final meet on his home track. Borowsky ran 9:27.96 to win the 3200 Meter Run and then came back to run 4:26.73 to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of Lake Zurich’s Brian Griffith (4:29.02) and his brother Kyle (4:30.19). Jamir Gibson (Zion Benton HS) also picked up two wins first in the Shot Put (50-1 ½) and then throwing 150-11 to win the Discus. Noah Agnew (Vernon Hills HS) cleared 6-9 for the second time this year to win the High Jump.

Okaw Valley Boys @ Tolono Unity

Host Tolono Unity tuned up for the upcoming 2A sectionals by easily winning this conference championship (194 points) followed by St. Joseph-Ogden (132 points). Unity had three athletes that were multiple individual event winners. Jayden Kaiser won the 100 Meter Dash (10.95) as well as the 400 Meter Dash (50.82). Steven Migut put up some sizzling times in the hurdle events running 14.78 to win the 110 High and 39.68 to win the 300 Hurdles. Andrew Warnes was the other double winner as he ran 1:57.27 to win the 800 Meter Run and 4:26.94 to win the 1600 Meter Run.

South Seven Conference Meet @ Marion

The monster meet of the weekend especially with two top ten national performances. Darryl Sullivan (Marion HS) first cleared 7-2 and then 7-4 (US#2) to win the High Jump. Sam Sikon (Carbondale HS) had a goal at the beginning of the season to go past 65 feet in the Shot Put. He achieved that Friday when he had a 65-2 ½ put (US#10) to win the event. Sikon came back to throw a seasonal best 170-5 to win the Discus.

Even without their star Ja’Mari Ward, Cahokia still won the team title 166-135 ahead of host Marion.

Southland Athletic Conference Boys @ Bloom

Bloom’s Antonio Davis had the top performance of the meet running 48.93 (IL #8) to win the 400 Meter Dash. Gamar Hayles (Rich Central HS, Olympia Fields) ran 14.81 to win the 110 High Hurdles. LaVall McNulty (Crete-Monee HS) had a 156-3 throw to win the Discus winning by over thirty feet. Bloom won the team championship (187 points) ahead of Crete-Monee (149 points).

Southwest Conference Boys @ Granite City

Thunderstorms pushed this meet back one day to Thursday. Patience was a virtue in this meet as some great performances were given in this meet. Edwardsville captured the conference crown 164-145 over East St. Louis-Senior. O’Fallon scored 96 points to finish third. East St. Louis once again turned in some top times in winning the three sprint relays. The Flyers started off by winning the 400 Meter Relay with this season’s state best time (41.37). Edwardsville also dipped under 42 seconds to finish second (41.86, IL #2) followed by Belleville West (42.34). East St. Louis followed that up by winning the 800 Meter Relay (1:26.87) and the 1600 Meter Relay (3:16.96). Granite City stopped the relay sweep as they won the 3200 Meter Relay (8:03.33) ahead of East St. Louis-Senior (8:07.17).

AJ Epenesa (Edwardsville HS) established a new personal best in the Shot Put winning the event with a 57-2 put (IL #13). Epenesa was over 180 feet again as he threw 190-5 to easily win the Discus. Amari Franklin (Belleville East HS) won the Triple Jump (46-6 ½). Kenny Robertson (East St. Louis-Senior) jumped 22-10 ¼ to win the Long Jump.

Travis Anderson (Edwardsville HS) missed his personal best by one hundredth of a second but easily won the 110 Hurdles running under 14 seconds for the second time this season (13.96). It took a photo to separate Anderson and East St. Louis’ Delano Anderson at last week’s Collinsville Invitational 300 Intermediate Hurdles. It was just as close this time as Travis Anderson won the event (38.30) just ahead of Delano Anderson (38.33).

Marlowe Mosley (East St. Louis-Senior) ran 10.75 to win the 100 Meter Dash as Collinsville’s Tyler Wilson finished second (10.95). Roosevelt Davis (East St. Louis-Senior) won a hot 200 Meter Dash as he ran a season’s best 21.54 (IL #4) just ahead of Belleville West’s Deshon Buchanan’s seasonal best of 21.74 (IL #8). Chris Conrad (O’Fallon HS) continues to run strong as he ran 1:55.61 to win the 800 Meter Run ahead of East St. Louis-Senior’s Sanchez Rhodes (1:56.83).

Southwest Prairie Conference Boys @ Oswego East

Minooka dominated the team competition winning the conference championship with 149 points. Plainfield North (84 points) edged Plainfield East (82 points) for second place. They were paced by a pair of individual double wins. Justin Wolz won the 110 High Hurdles (15.37) by a tenth of a second ahead of Plainfield South’s Ben Thoms (15.47). Wolz came back to run 39.65 to win the 300 Hurdles. Soren Knudsen picked up the distance double running 9:40.52 to win the 3200 Meter Run and 4:22.94 to win the 1600 Meter Run.

Victor Osinloye (Romeoville HS) had a seasonal best 175-2 (IL #7) to win the Discus by more than 30 feet. The relays were close in this meet. Plainfield North (42.45) edged Minooka (42.58) to win the 400 Meter Relay. Minooka turned the tables in the 800 Meter Relay winning ahead of Plainfield North (1:29.27-1:29.61).  Plainfield South picked up a win in the 1600 Meter Relay (3:25.43) just ahead of Oswego (3:25.87). Oswego East picked up the win in the 3200 Meter Relay (8:05.94) just ahead of Plainfield South (8:06.24).

Southwest Suburban Blue Conference Boys @ Bolingbrook

Sandburg did not load up their events, but still came away with the conference championship (132 points) just ahead of Lockport (123 points). Sandburg of course dominated the distance races winning all four events. They started out running 8:01.71 winning by over 20 seconds ahead of Lincoln-Way East (8:23.46). Dan Laskero won the 3200 Meter Run (9:47.46). Tom Brennan won the 800 Meter Run (2:01.14). Chris Torpy ended the sweep running 4:18.26 to win the 1600 Meter Run by more than fifteen seconds ahead of teammate Martin Skucas (4:34.02).

Derrius Rodgers (Lockport HS) was a triple event winner. He ran 10.81 to win the 100 Meter Dash just three hundredths of a second ahead of Sandburg’s Ayo Abiona (10.84). Rodgers easily won the 400 Meter Dash (49.10) and then also the 200 Meter Dash (22.12).

John Meyer (Lockport HS) was also a double individual event winner as he won the Shot Put (62-0) and the Discus (175-10). Daniel Estelle (Homewood-Flossmoor HS) jumped a personal best 23-3 ¾ (IL #7) to win the Long Jump.

Upstate Eight Conference Boys @ St. Charles North

A win in the 1600 Meter Relay by Batavia clinched the conference title 126 ½ - 118 over West Aurora. The Bulldogs ran 3:25.63 to win the relay ahead of West Aurora (3:27.27) and St. Charles East (3:27.84). West Aurora looked “state meet” good with some of their performances. They took 1-2 in both horizontal jumps. Chris Walker jumped 22-4 ¾ to win the Long Jump ahead of teammate Davion Cross. It was Cross that came back to win the Triple Jump (47-3) just ahead of Walker’s 46-9 jump. West Aurora also went 1-2 in the High Jump led by the 6-7 clearance by sophomore Camron Donatlan.

Connor McCue (West Aurora HS) took it easy just running one event. His 4:22.72 was good enough to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of Geneva’s Tyler Dau (4:29.06) and Batavia’s Shea Bastian (4:29.82). Batavia only had two event wins other than the 1600 Meter Relay to win this meet. Will Akers ran 41.19 to win the 300 Intermediate Hurdles just by a tenth of a second ahead of St. Charles East’s James Cooper (41.29). Batavia also won the 3200 Meter Relay (8:21.84) by just nine hundredths of a second ahead of Geneva (8:21.93).

Western Big Six Conference Boys @ Galesburg

East Moline United won the conference championship 139-101 over Rock Island. Galesburg finished third (92 points) just one point ahead of Moline. Galesburg’s Josh Eiker was the story of the night as he won two individual events including a new meet record in the 100 Meter Dash. Eiker ran 10.49 for the win ahead of Rock Island’s Tyler Foulks (10.87) and Doug Wilson (10.98). Eiker bested the two Rock Island sprinters again in the 200 Meter Dash as he ran 21.34 ahead of Wilson (22.28) and Foulks (22.37). Doug Wilson was the one who had the edge in the 400 Meter Dash as he ran 49.37 ahead of Eiker’s 49.79.

Rock Island looked strong in sweeping the sprint relays. The Rocks ran 42.37 to win the 400 Meter Relay ahead of Galesburg (43.36). Rock Island captured the 800 Meter Relay (1:31.12) as well as the 1600 Meter Relay (3:28.10). Kyler Yodts (Alleman HS, Rock Island) had a 59-3 ½ effort to win the Shot Put. Darius King (Moline HS) threw 164-4 to win the Discus.

WSC-Gold Boys @ Morton West

The field events were the main focus of this meet. Ben Jung (Downers Grove South HS) jumped a monster personal best 23-7 (IL #5) to win the Long Jump. Shawn Davis led a 1-2 Hinsdale South sweep in the Triple Jump. Davis’ distance was 45-4 just one inch ahead of teammate Diamond Anderson. Darin Gipson (Morton HS, Berwyn) had a 55-4 put to win the Shot Put.
